How to Find Your QuickBooks License Number

Your QuickBooks license number and product number are the two credentials that prove you own a legitimate copy of the software. Without them, you cannot reinstall QuickBooks, activate it on a new computer, transfer it to a different machine, or get meaningful help from Intuit support. Many users only realize they need these numbers at the worst possible moment: during a hard drive failure, a new computer setup, or a software reinstallation. What Is the QuickBooks License Number?

QuickBooks Desktop uses two separate codes to identify your copy of the software:

License Number: A 15-digit numeric code, typically formatted as four groups separated by dashes (for example, 1234-5678-9012-345). This number identifies your specific licensed copy. It is unique to your purchase and is required for activation, reinstallation, and support verification.

Product Number: A 6-digit code (for example, 123-456) that identifies the product edition and version year. This tells Intuit and the installer which version of QuickBooks you purchased: Pro, Premier, Enterprise, or a specific industry edition.

Both numbers work together. When you reinstall or activate QuickBooks, the installer asks for both. Providing only one is not sufficient. The product number also determines which installer file you need to download if you are reinstalling from scratch.

The license number is unique to each installation. If you purchased multiple licenses for multiple computers, each computer has its own unique license number. Your product number, however, will be the same across all copies of the same version and edition.

On 64-bit Windows, if you do not find the QuickBooks key under `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Intuit`, also check `HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Intuit\QuickBooks`.

You can also check the QuickBooks registration file stored on disk. Navigate to `C:\ProgramData\Common Files\Intuit\QuickBooks` in File Explorer.
