QuickBooks Desktop 2023 is Intuit's latest on-premise accounting solution designed for small to mid-size businesses that prefer a locally installed application over cloud-based software. Before You Begin
Complete these preparation steps before starting the download to avoid interruptions:
- Locate your license and product key. Your 15-digit license number and product key were emailed to you at the time of purchase or are available in your Intuit account under My Account > Orders & Purchases. You will need both during activation.
- Sign in to your Intuit account. Go to accounts.intuit.com and log in with the email address associated with your QuickBooks purchase.
- Confirm your edition and year. Verify you are downloading QuickBooks Desktop 2023, not an older version. The download portal lists all purchases tied to your account.
- Disable antivirus temporarily. Some antivirus programs flag the QuickBooks installer as a false positive and block the download. Temporarily disable real-time protection in your security software before downloading, then re-enable it after installation is complete.
- Close all running applications. Shut down other programs, especially any previous version of QuickBooks, to ensure the installer can write files without conflicts.
- Create a system restore point. On Windows, go to Control Panel > System > System Protection > Create to create a restore point before making major software changes.
Step-by-Step Download Guide
Follow these steps to download the QuickBooks Desktop 2023 installer from your Intuit account:
- Open a web browser and navigate to accounts.intuit.com. Sign in with your Intuit credentials.
- Click on My Account in the top navigation, then select Products & Billing or Orders & Purchases depending on your account layout.
- Locate QuickBooks Desktop 2023 in your product list. Click the Download button next to it.
- A dialog will appear confirming your edition (Pro Plus, Premier Plus, or Enterprise). Verify the details and click Download Now.
- The installer file will download to your default Downloads folder. The file name will be similar to `QBD2023_Installer.exe` and is approximately 600-900 MB in size.
- Wait for the download to finish completely. Do not open the installer while it is still downloading, as a partial installer file will fail to run.
Alternative Download Method:
If you cannot access your Intuit account, you can download the installer using the Intuit download tool at https://downloads.quickbooks.com/app/qbdt/products. Select your product, year (2023), and country, then download the installer. You will still need your license and product key for activation.
Installation Steps
Once the installer file has downloaded completely:
- Navigate to your Downloads folder and right-click on `QBD2023_Installer.exe`. Select Run as administrator to ensure the installer has the necessary system permissions.
- If prompted by User Account Control (UAC), click Yes to allow the program to make changes to your device.
- On the Welcome screen, click Next to begin.
- Read and accept the License Agreement by selecting I accept the terms in the License Agreement, then click Next.
- On the Choose Installation Type screen, select one of the following:
- Express - Installs QuickBooks in the default location (`C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2023\`) with standard settings. Recommended for most users.
- Custom and Network - Choose this if you need to change the install directory, set up a multi-user environment, or install only specific components.
- If you chose Custom and Network, select your installation type: Local Only (single user), I'll be using QuickBooks on this computer AND storing our company file here (multi-user host), or I will NOT be using QuickBooks on this computer (file server only).
- Click Install. The installation will take between 5 and 15 minutes depending on your system speed. Do not restart your computer or close the installer during this process.
- When the installation completes, click Finish. QuickBooks Desktop 2023 will launch automatically.
Activation
After installation, you must activate QuickBooks to unlock full functionality. Unactivated QuickBooks runs in a limited trial mode.
- When QuickBooks launches for the first time, the Let's get your license screen appears. Enter your 15-digit license number and product key in the fields provided.
- Click Next. QuickBooks will attempt to verify your license over the internet.
- On the Activation screen, select Activate Online for automatic activation (requires internet). If your computer is not connected to the internet, choose Activate by Phone and follow the instructions to call Intuit's activation line.
- Once activated, you will see a confirmation message. Click OK to proceed to the QuickBooks home screen.
- If you are upgrading from a previous version, QuickBooks will prompt you to Update your company file. This process is one-way and irreversible, so ensure you have a backup of your old company file before proceeding. Click Update Now to continue.
To verify activation at any time, open QuickBooks and go to Help > Activate QuickBooks Desktop. If activation is complete, you will see "QuickBooks is registered."
Troubleshooting Download Issues
Download stalls or stops mid-way:
Pause and resume the download. If the issue persists, try a different browser (Edge or Chrome tend to work better for large Intuit downloads). Clear your browser cache and cookies before retrying. Check your internet connection speed and switch to a wired connection if possible.
Installer won't run or shows "This app can't run on your PC":
This error usually means you downloaded the 32-bit installer on a 64-bit system or vice versa. Return to your Intuit account, confirm the correct version was downloaded, and try again. Ensure your Windows version is 64-bit by going to Settings > System > About.
Antivirus blocks the installer:
Temporarily disable your antivirus software before running the installer. After installation, add `C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks 2023\` to your antivirus exclusions list to prevent future interference.
"QuickBooks has stopped working" during install:
Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator. If the error persists, reboot your computer, then re-run the installer. Run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool available from the Intuit support site to automatically detect and repair common installation errors.
Activation error "Invalid Product Number":
Double-check that you are entering the license number and product key exactly as they appear in your purchase confirmation email. Hyphens are sometimes omitted in emails but must be entered in the format shown on screen. If the key is correct and activation still fails, contact Intuit support to re-validate your license.
Error 1328 or 1334 during install:
These errors indicate a corrupted installer file. Delete the downloaded file, clear your browser's download cache, and re-download from your Intuit account. Verify the file size matches what Intuit reports for your edition.
Expert Insight
Before any QuickBooks installation, I always advise clients to run Windows Update and ensure .NET Framework 4.8 is installed. Half of the installation failures I see stem from an outdated Windows environment rather than the QuickBooks installer itself. Taking five minutes to update your system can save hours of troubleshooting later.
