QuickBooks Desktop 2013 is a legacy version of Intuit's on-premise accounting software. Official support ended in May 2016, yet many small business owners still need to reinstall it when migrating to a new machine or recovering from a hard drive failure - all while holding a valid existing license. This guide covers everything you need to locate your installer, complete installation, and activate QuickBooks 2013 on a Windows PC.

+1 (800) 446-8848What Is QuickBooks Desktop 2013?
QuickBooks Desktop 2013 (internal version 23.0) was released in fall 2012 and sold through 2013. It shipped in three primary editions:
- QuickBooks Pro 2013 - Core double-entry bookkeeping for sole proprietors and small businesses with up to 3 simultaneous users. Covers invoicing, expense tracking, bank reconciliation, and standard financial reports.
- QuickBooks Premier 2013 - Adds industry-specific features and report templates for up to 5 users. Includes editions for Contractor, Manufacturing, Nonprofit, Professional Services, and Retail.
- QuickBooks Enterprise 13.0 - Full-featured solution supporting up to 30 users with advanced inventory, role-based permissions, and expanded reporting.
Key improvements introduced in the 2013 release included a refreshed toolbar layout, improved income tracker, enhanced batch invoicing for Premier and Enterprise, and better integration with Intuit's then-current payroll and merchant services offerings.
Important Notice: End-of-Life Status
Intuit discontinued active support for QuickBooks Desktop 2013 in May 2016 under its standard three-year service discontinuation policy. What this means in practice:
- No security patches. Known vulnerabilities in the 2013 codebase will not be fixed. Running company financial data through unpatched software carries real risk.
- No payroll updates. Live Payroll and Basic Payroll subscriptions no longer function with this version. Tax tables cannot be downloaded.
- No bank feeds. Direct Connect and Web Connect integrations have been retired for this version. Manual import via .QBO files may still work depending on your bank.
- No technical support from Intuit. Phone and chat support agents will not assist with 2013-version issues.
If you are reinstalling QuickBooks 2013 solely to access archived company files or prepare old records for an accountant or audit, that is a valid use case. For active day-to-day bookkeeping, upgrading to a current subscription version is strongly recommended.
System Requirements for QuickBooks 2013
Before downloading, verify your machine meets the minimum specifications. Installing on an incompatible system often produces cryptic errors during setup.
Operating System:
- Windows XP (SP3), Windows Vista (SP2), Windows 7, or Windows 8
- Windows 10 and Windows 11 are not officially supported. The installer may run in compatibility mode with mixed results (see Troubleshooting section below).
Processor:
- Minimum: 2.4 GHz processor
RAM:
- Minimum: 1 GB (2 GB recommended for better performance)
Storage:
- Minimum: 2.5 GB of free disk space for program files
- Additional space required for company files
Display:
- Minimum: 1024 x 768 screen resolution
Additional Requirements:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (required - installer will attempt to add it automatically)
- Internet Explorer 8 or higher (used internally for certain QuickBooks menus)
- Administrator rights on the local Windows account
Before You Begin
Gather the following before starting the download process to avoid interruptions mid-install:
- Original license number and product key. Your 15-digit license number and product key were included in your original purchase confirmation email, printed inside the retail box, or are accessible in your Intuit account under My Account > Orders and Purchases. Both are required for activation.
- Intuit account credentials. Sign in at accounts.intuit.com with the email address used at the time of purchase. If you purchased QuickBooks 2013 before creating an Intuit account, contact Intuit support to link your license.
- Administrator rights. You must run the installer as a Windows administrator. Right-click the installer file and select Run as administrator if you are on a standard account.
- Temporarily disable antivirus software. Some security tools flag legacy Intuit installers as false positives and block extraction. Disable real-time protection before downloading, then re-enable it after installation completes.
- Close all other applications. Shut down any currently running version of QuickBooks or other accounting software before launching the installer.

+1 (800) 446-8848Step-by-Step Download Guide
Intuit no longer lists QuickBooks 2013 in the main product download portal, but registered license holders can still retrieve the installer through two routes:
Route A - Intuit Account (Registered Licenses):
- Open a web browser and go to accounts.intuit.com. Sign in.
- Navigate to My Account, then select Orders and Purchases or Products and Billing.
- Scroll through your purchase history and locate QuickBooks Desktop 2013. If the listing appears, click Download or Get Installer.
- If the listing does not appear, proceed to Route B.
Route B - Intuit Legacy Download via Support:
- Go to the Intuit QuickBooks support page for downloading legacy desktop versions.
- Select your product year (2013), edition (Pro, Premier, or Enterprise), and Windows version.
- Intuit will provide a direct download link for the installer `.exe` file.
- Save the file to a location you can easily find, such as your Desktop or Downloads folder.
In both cases the file will be named something like `QuickBooksDesktopProPlus2013.exe` or similar depending on edition.
Installation Steps
Once you have the installer file downloaded:
- Right-click the `.exe` file and select Run as administrator.
- The InstallShield setup wizard will launch. Click Next to proceed past the welcome screen.
- Read and accept the Software License Agreement, then click Next.
- Choose your installation type. Select Custom if you want to specify the install directory; otherwise leave Express selected.
- Confirm the installation path (default: `C:\Program Files (x86)\Intuit\QuickBooks 2013\`) and click Install.
- The installer will extract files and configure Windows components including .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 if it is not already present. This step can take several minutes.
- When installation completes, click Finish. Do not launch QuickBooks yet if the installer prompts a restart - reboot first.
Activation
QuickBooks 2013 requires activation to unlock beyond the 30-day trial mode:
- Launch QuickBooks Desktop 2013 from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.
- On the first launch, the Let's get your license window appears. Enter your 15-digit license number and product key in the fields provided, then click Next.
- QuickBooks will attempt online activation via Intuit's servers. If successful, you will see a confirmation message and the software will open fully licensed.
- Phone activation: If online activation fails (common with older licenses), click By Phone. A unique installation number will be displayed on screen. Call the Intuit activation line shown on the screen, provide the installation number, and an Intuit representative will give you an authorization code to enter.
If your license has been registered to a different machine and you are reinstalling, online activation may fail until the previous registration is cleared. Phone activation is the reliable fallback in this scenario.
Troubleshooting Download Issues
Installer not appearing in Intuit account:
If QuickBooks 2013 is absent from your purchase history, it may be registered under a different email address. Try logging in with alternate emails, or contact Intuit support and provide your license number directly - they can look up the account it is tied to.
.NET Framework errors during installation:
If setup fails with a .NET error, manually install .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 from the Microsoft Download Center before running the QuickBooks installer again. On Windows 10 or 11, you can enable .NET 3.5 via Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows features on or off.
Running on Windows 10 or Windows 11:
QuickBooks 2013 is not certified for Windows 10 or 11, but many users have successfully installed it using compatibility mode:
- Right-click the QuickBooks installer `.exe`.
- Select Properties, then click the Compatibility tab.
- Check Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows 7.
- Click Apply, then run the installer.
Results vary by machine and Windows build. Some features, particularly the QuickBooks Update Service and certain report printing functions, may not work correctly.
Installer blocked by antivirus:
Add the QuickBooks installer `.exe` as an exclusion in your antivirus software before running it. Common programs that block legacy Intuit installers include Windows Defender, Malwarebytes, and Norton.
Expert Insight
When clients ask about reinstalling QuickBooks 2013, I always check whether they still have their original license documentation. Intuit can locate a license tied to a registered account, but users who never registered face a much harder recovery process. The safest approach is to upgrade to a current subscription.
